Creating and Managing Economic Competitiveness: SAGIA Harvard Case Solution & Analysis

Research Methods and Processes

The methods or research that I have chosen to carry on my research don’t include any quantitative methods and are mostly qualitative. The report is an integrated case analysis of Saudi Arabian general investment authority. While doing the analysis, the first approach was to thoroughly study the background and history of the case and things related to it. After doing that, I extracted the issue or the problem statement from the case that needed to be addressed. The case analysis and methods for analysis were chosen according to the need of the problem.

The case was analyzed using different models that helped in analyzing the external and internal environment of the organization. The models used and included the SWOT analysis model which helped in identifying the internal strengths along with the weaknesses of the organization and also analyzed the external threat, and opportunities present for SAGIA. The next model applied was a PEST analysis model that is mainly used to analyze the external factors for the company. The PEST made the political, environmental, social and technological factors visible, viable and present in the external environment of SAGIA.

With the help of these models, the analysis in the report gave a clear view to the readers of the strengths and weaknesses of the organization and what are the threats the company shall pay attention to and a clear view of the opportunities on which the organization can capitalize upon. The reading also gives readers the knowledge of the political and social environment of Saudi Arabia along with technological and environmental factors that are important for the industry.

In the second phase of the analysis, the two models that were used were approaching two different dimensions. The first of these models helped in identifying a resource that is of immense importance for SAGIA, through VRIO analysis. With the help of this model the resource was not only identified but was also measured on the basis of its rareness that guided towards calculating the chances of limitation for that particular resource by rivals or other players from another industry.

The last model used in the analysis of the case was of immense importance not just for analysis but for the readers as well. The model used to be porter’s five forces model that is used to analyze the industrial factors for a company. This model gave a descriptive view of the industrial factors for SAGIA. Through these forces, the threat of new entrants and the substitute of SAGIA were identified along with the powers of buyers and suppliers that give them the leverage to bargain as well. The intensities of these forces were also measured along with the intensity of the present and future competition for the organization.

The methods of analysis were made clear in the proposed plan and relevant literature review was conducted to take the guidelines of the writers about these topics and the issues that needed to be countered in the integrated case analysis. As no research tools were required for this study, so no quantitative data were gathered and analyzed. Although the economic statistics of Saudi Arabia that were relevant to the case were analyzed at the start of the analysis and findings portion.

Literature and Sources

In the portion of literature review theories related to the topics relevant to the case along with the theories and concepts about the models, selected to be applied for the analysis portion. The concepts that were studied in the literature review included economic competitiveness of Saudi Arabia, the concept of foreign direct investment and related theories about the concept of Saudization. These topics were necessary to be studied as these were the main focus of SAGIA’s objectives.

The organization was formed to improve the rate of unemployment and to attract foreign direct investment in the country, allowing the Saudi national to work in the private sector that was dominated by foreign expatriates. By these objectives, SAGIA was aiming to increase the economic competitiveness of the country and was on a mission to be in the list of top ten competitive nations of the world. In the first portion of the literature review, these three concepts were studied using different scholarly articles and research papers written by renowned authors. These articles helped to gain a clear view of the current status of the economic competitiveness of Saudi Arabia and the methods that can help SAGIA improve its current status in the respective field.
