Walmarts Sustainability Strategy (C): Inventory Management in the Seafood Supply Chain Harvard Case Solution & Analysis

In 2007, Walmart sources about $ 750 million in seafood annually. Although the output of the world's fisheries has decreased to 3 percent of the level of production in 1900, the volume of seafood business grew by about 25 percent a year. Against this background, Peter Redmond, vice president of seafood delicacies, believes that continuity of supply was the biggest long-term issue facing the seafood network. To help solve this problem within the framework of the recently announced strategy for the sustainable development of the company, Walmart set a goal to go to the sale of 100 percent of the MSC certified seafood caught by the end of 2011. To achieve her goal, selling only certified fish caught, Walmart will have to work through their suppliers to increase the number of fisheries and processing plants within the certification program MSC. This case describes MSC certification and chain of salmon from the point of view of one of the first level suppliers Walmart fish and seafood. It provides enough detail that students should be able to make recommendations on how to streamline their Walmart seafood supply chain to reduce costs and ensure sustainability. "Hide
