The Dark Side of Information Technology Harvard Case Solution & Analysis

Information Technology has played a vital in business expansions and globalization through enhanced productivity. But however, this benefit has raised a threat for their employees as well. The research, conducted by the author, in 28 firms, including 3100 employees who frequently use IT as in their task, found a dark side of IT use.

Employees have to respond rapidly to the streams of information that come at them from a number of devices in real time and then ultimately they suffer from “technostress”. Working from the location other than a traditional office and flextime adhere the employees to their devices round the clock.

As research indicates that many of the employees want to escape from this while some of them assumes themselves as “addicted” to these stresses causing technologies. Simultaneously, another dark aspect of IT is the misuse of organizational IT by employees that have triggered different kinds of attacks.

One of the recommendations given by the author is to develop awareness among employees regarding the proper use of IT at work and to encourage employees to be mindful about how they use IT. IT leaders have the responsibility to incorporate such applications that could reduce the negative consequences of IT systems and to train their employees about each related aspects of IT systems.

To mitigate this stress HR leaders should encourage multiple programs and should start the campaign that could extend the responsible IT use among the technology addicted employees. This dark aspect of IT could be eradicated through an integrated approach from senior representatives of IT company, HR leaders and IT leaders to come up with a new dimension regarding the efficient use of IT.
