Sona Koyo Steering Systems Limited: Spearheading Competitiveness in Indias Automotive Components Industry Harvard Case Solution & Analysis

Since the mid-1980s, Sona management system (later renamed Sona Koyo Steering Systems Ltd) was a competitive player in the Indian automotive industry. The company has made significant progress in competitiveness through the many initiatives over the last two decades. Starting as a sole provider of simple mechanical steering systems, the company systematically improve competitiveness, becomes capable of Deming Prize firm with the capabilities of the entire value of the industry. By November 2005, the company has many customers and some of them have been developed complete systems to their specifications. This case provides a context for identifying the sources of Sona Koyo competitiveness through two important concepts. Versatile and easy process performance assets (APP) framework is used to identify the relevant factors of competitiveness, while the concept of "competitiveness journey" is introduced for the study of a variety of contexts, scenarios, strategies and initiatives, as well as the company.
