Rodamas Group: Designing Strategies for Changing Realities in Emerging Economies Harvard Case Solution & Analysis

The case tells the story of Rodamas, owned by ethnic Chinese Tan family in Indonesia. The company started as a trading company in 1951 and, over time, became a joint venture partner in enterprises with different main Japanese partners after Indonesia began to start the program of industrialization in the late 1960s. In 1980, the company has been gradually transferred to the second generation of leaders, and continued to grow and prosper until it became part of the top 20 business groups in Indonesia.

Organizations including the production of glass (from Asahi), personal care (with Kao), packaging (with Dai Nippon) and MSG production. Rodamas role in these partnerships have to deal with local regulations, hire local employees and distribute products in Indonesia. When then President Suharto was ousted in the Asian crisis in 1998, Indonesia has undergone several major changes, including the transition to democracy. Its economy has become more open, and foreign firms were allowed to operate in the country without a local partner. In addition, a series of global events business, including transnational corporations tendency to rely on lawyers and consultants, not local partners share threatened Rodamas business model. In this regard, the current leader, Mucki Tan, reviewing the future of the company and weighing several options. It ends these strategic options are: 1) internationalization with existing partners, and 2) the development of a business, you need a little bit of technology, such as property, 3) purchase of existing manufacturers, and 4) an emphasis on the distribution of products to foreign multinationals, and 5) the focus the traditional role of the partnership with the new wave of foreign direct investment (FDI) in developing transnational corporations market, in particular, China.
