Lauren McDonald, newly promoted manager for public accounting firm Ernst & Young in London, Ontario, has a meeting with one of his senior staff accountants. McDonald met with the staff accountant, two months earlier as part of a six-month review of the staff accountant. The meeting also included informal discussions about what staff accountant was on the way to promotion to manager, which will be decided later this year. Staff accountant McDonald asked for another meeting to discuss the responsibilities of becoming a manager in more detail. McDonald has faced many challenges in her three months as manager and there was no time to think about their activities.
