Keidanren: Foreign Political Contributions in Japan Harvard Case Solution & Analysis

Japan has been more attention to companies' participation in the political process in general, and of their political campaign contributions in particular. Over the last decade, Japan has set new limits on political giving companies and demanded greater disclosure of campaign contributions. Increasingly, shareholders tend to hold companies accountable for their campaign contributions. Fujio Mitarai was appointed chairman of the Japan Federation of Economic Organizations ("Keidanren") from 23 May 2006. Keidanren is regarded by many as the most powerful interest groups in Japan. Mitarai said that technological innovation is not enough, and that the social and economic reforms necessary to improve the competitiveness of Japanese companies. For a long time, Japan used to be closed to foreign companies, and foreign companies still do not have equal access to the Japanese economy in which the public sector contracts are usually awarded to Japanese companies.
