Global Software Piracy: Trends and Strategic Considerations Harvard Case Solution & Analysis

Design, manufacture, distribution and sale of software is a rapidly growing and highly profitable global industry. The leaders of most of these companies understand that intellectual property rights (IPR) are usually vital for competitive advantage and business success. Theft of intellectual property (IP) in the form of software piracy is brazen, very expensive, reduces the incentive to innovate, and threatens the very existence of some companies. IP theft, therefore, is a difficult task for managers of software companies. In this paper, we make some assessments to be useful for software developers, managers, responsible users, stakeholders and the innovative software and use, that is, almost all of us. By doing so, we provide an overview of international, legal, ethical, economic and system considerations, and we share the analysis of the drivers of consumer software piracy. We then discuss the strategic considerations and implementation of solutions typology that can help legitimate companies to develop strategies and tactics to manage their software IP in widespread piracy.
