PROBLEM STATEMENT:

Randy Murphy who was the president of East Coast Trail Association was concerned about the 540-kilometer coastal hiking trail that was at stake. The issues concerning Murphy was the development of the trail that was threaten by the frequent transaction regarding land, lack of meaningful protection for trail and other issues such as Trail maintenance, obtaining land for the trail and lack in volunteer resources.

EAST COAST TRAIL ASSOCIATION:

The group of hiking enthusiast established ECTA in the year 1995 with the goal to develop the East Coast Trail starting from Topsail to Trepassey and maintain it. In the start, ECTA had 230 trail clearer volunteers and in the year 1996, it had hundreds of members those pays fees. During the same year, ECTA obtained funds from the ACOA for the development of Trail Coast that cover the 220-kilometer portion of the Coast.

During the year 2001, the 220-kilometer trail coast was completed and opened for the public to visit. The trail was built on world-class standards that attracted the hikers to come and visit this trail. The successful development of the 220-kilometer trail coast made it possible for the East Coast Trail Association to grow from small hiking club into a large non-profit organization. ECTA was the non-profit organization that had a paid staff and volunteers those were dedicated. From a small club to a large organization, its goal also extended that was to build the 540-kilometer of coastal and inland trails for the hikers.

On the other hand, its mission also composed to find sufficient funding for the development of the coasts and to maintain it according to the natural environment that fulfills the need of the communities and give them the higher quality of hiking experience.

INDUSTRY ANALYSIS:

In the North America, hiking as the recreational activities become the rapidly growing industry. The experts made the prediction that; industry would grow over the upcoming 50 years. The hikers were attracted towards the industry that resulted in the development of the coast trails at large level.

The development of the Coastal Trails not just beneficial for the hikers and communities but it also Benedict for the economy as well. This was mainly because it generates economic value, improves social values and it reduces the health related diseases.

The hiking becomes the significant industry for the Newfoundland, where it attracted more tourists from other provinces to come and visit the newly developed East Coast Trail.

SWOT ANALYSIS:

Strengths:

The internal strength of the East Coast Trail was that, it successfully developed the 220-kilometer east coast trail for the hiking, which was developed following the high quality standards. The tourists were attracted to the Newfoundland because of the strong marketing and media coverage given by the media. In addition to their success, other trail associations were asking for the advice in order to develop trail coasts.

Weakness:

ECTA had the difficulties to generate funds and this was due to the reason that the company did not had the sources to generate income as it was the non-profit organization that mostly relied on the funds and grants given by the government agencies and private donations. The donation was more difficult to take as each of the donation process was lengthy and it takes additional time from all the volunteers.

Opportunity:

The ECTA was the leading non-profit organization that develops the oceanfront for hiking that had created its image globally. This attracted tourists from different parts of the world, which signifies the development of the costal trails. From hiking the health diseases were reducing that also result in attraction of the coastal trail.

Threat:

The threat for the ECTA was the, Land development association who wanted to acquire the coastal land and rent it to the tourists. The cost of acquiring land was low that made it difficult for the ECTA to acquire the land from its owners as land builders were actively acquiring these lands. The view of the ocean was spectacular that attracted communities, builders and real estate associations to acquire those lands. Residents and visitors were buying the land to spend their vacations on the ocean front coast. There was also the pressure from the town council to develop these costal lands into residential areas.................
