Competition and Collaboration in the PC Industry: The Evolution of a Value Chain (A) Harvard Case Solution & Analysis

Three cases in this series is to monitor developments in the personal computer industry from its inception until 2006, which makes it possible to study the issues of cooperation and competition, as the value chain in the industry evolves. The case looks at these tensions through the prism of relations between the two most successful industries for companies-Compaq and Intel. In the case described by the mid-1990s, Compaq was the largest PC manufacturer in the world. Computer Compaq, used Microsoft software and Intel processors. Compaq was the largest client of Intel and Intel was the largest supplier of Compaq. Not surprisingly, this caused quite a stir when the leaders of Compaq and Intel entered into heated spat in September 1994, the Conference of European technology.
