Competencies: Alternative Frameworks for Competitive Advantage Harvard Case Solution & Analysis

Competence in the organization can be classified as level of employees and organizational level. Because at the organizational level competencies are embedded in the employee's level of competence, identifying latter is important for organizations interested in the use of competencies to achieve competitive advantage. In this paper we present a model of competencies as a means to organizational competitiveness and discuss various frameworks for identifying staff competencies. In addition to the traditional structures that are more suited to organizations operating in a static environment, we propose two alternative structures, which are useful in the determination of competence in a dynamic organizational environment.
