Carolinas HealthCare System: Consumer Analytics Harvard Case Solution & Analysis

In 2014, the Chief Clinical Officer, Michael Dulin and head of Dickson Advanced Analytics (DA2), successfully accumulated analytic talent in one group in three years. Rapidly increasing computing power and decline in data storage costs had empowered the data architects of DA2 to construct predictive models featuring complex fiscal, clinical, demographic, and claims data that would have not been possible to create in a couple of years.

However, in 2014, both Apple and Google declared features in their own new mobile operating systems that gathered and displayed output signal from various health-wearable (such as heart-rate monitors or step-counters), in addition to electronic medical record (EMR) information. Large consumer bases, in addition to their expertise in analytics, accessibility to place and demographic data, led Dulin to consider what precise role DA2 could play and which players consumers would trust to incorporate their healthcare data later on.
