Buses for Democracy: Improving Public Transport in South Africa Harvard Case Solution & Analysis

Johannesburg, South Africa immediately needs to improve its public transport system for the coming FIFA World Cup 2010. The solution proposed was the introduction of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system and it needed to buy-in from the minibus taxi industry that already serving to commuters with its 22,000 minibus taxis, but which sometimes threatens violence to ensure there is little change in its way of operating.

The executive of Johannesburg taxi associations endeavored to streamline the industry and into a business partnership with the city, he embarks the personal growth to find the skills needed to lead in the industry. Under the Rea Vaya project, the leader and his team took the risk to implement the BRT system, which would ultimately improve the city’s transport not only for its residents but for the upcoming crowd, for FIFA.

A major threat occurred when two people were shot by a gunman in a BRT bus, just after the few days of launch of the system. With the fast approaching FIFA World Cup, such incident would create any significant impact? Is there any other alternative to prevent this? Should they postponed the project? It might not be possible to start it again, if they stop this project again. The writer, Anthony Prangley, has affiliation with the University of Pretoria.
