Blizzard, one of the most successful PC game publishers in the world and part of the international media conglomerate Vivendi Universal, filed a lawsuit in 2002 against the developers bnetd project. Via engineering software company Blizzard, developers bnetd created and distributed a free open-source software, mimicked Battle.net game from Blizzard experience while improving some of its shortcomings. Official charged bnetd developers breach of contract and breach of the various items of intellectual property rights. The defendants argued that the U.S. law, in order to encourage innovation in the United States, the protection of their activities.
