In 2006, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the Rockefeller Foundation joined together in a new organization, Agra, to address the historical problem of increasing agricultural production in Africa. Launched with great fanfare and under the leadership of former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan as chairman, AGRA sought to help the millions of African farmers and their families, food security and escape poverty. By 2008, AGRA assembled a strong management team and funded numerous small projects, ranging from seed development of education.
