Abbott and the AIDS Crisis (A) Harvard Case Solution & Analysis

In 1999, the 20-year-old AIDS crisis has ruined many developing countries and, in particular, on the African continent. Of the estimated 33.4 million people living with HIV / AIDS around the world in 1998, almost two-thirds (22 million) were in sub-Saharan Africa, considered the "global epicenter" of the disease. For 12 million people died, and life expectancy in the region has fallen from 62 to 47 years. Chicago-based Abbott Laboratories said early outbreak of AIDS through the development of an HIV test diagnostic kit, and then, later on in the crisis, developed some of the state-of-the-art HIV / AIDS. Abbott executives, led by the new CEO Miles White, wanted to address the crisis in sub-Saharan Africa, but also in concrete, effective and efficient way.
